'LIMINAL' - A Sci-Fi Short About An Experiment In Human Teleportation Gone Wrong
Due to Hollywood’s obsession with creating expensive, visual effects-laden spectacles on film and television, what often gets lost in the mix is what makes science fiction unique as a storytelling genre: examining the human condition through the exploration of big ideas.
The short film LIMINAL, by filmmakers Collin Davis and Matt Litwiller, is a brilliant example of a stripped down - yet intensely compelling - science fiction narrative powered by an intelligent script and exquisite acting.
The short tells the story of Gwen (Anna Campbell) a lead researcher of a top-secret scientific experiment in quantum mechanics. While taking a rooftop smoke break, she is joined by Tim (Max Lester), a colleague who works on another project.
As Gwen and Tim do what co-workers universally do while on work break - commiserate over their jobs - Gwen details her participation in an experiment to teleport human beings to the other planets within our solar system.
Gradually, Gwen reveals the latest stage in the experiment involving a human test subject has taken an unexpected, disturbing turn.
LIMINAL is shot in one take, a filmmaking style tailor-made for creating an immediate sense of intimacy and engagement with the story. As Gwen and Tim’s conversation escalates from the mundane to the dire, the dramatic tension ratchets up to match, leading to an emotional and taut climax.
