In The Sci-Fi Short 'MIRRORED' A Human Clone Fights For His Right To Exist
In the future depicted in the award-winning sci-fi short Mirrored, human cloning has been perfected. However, clones are only created to serve as a societal class of manual laborers.
Creating clones for any other purpose is illegal. In spite of this, a black market exists for clones produced by laboratories willing to skirt the law.
These laboratories offer “resurrection services” to the rich and powerful: when a client dies, a copy of their consciousness is downloaded into a healthy clone of their body, effectively resurrecting them and granting them a form of eternal life.
As the short opens, we witness the awakening of a clone in the facility known as Imago Labs. Michael Kraton (Graham Sibley) has died in a car accident three days prior and Imago Labs has cloned his body.
However, due to a glitch in the lab’s system, the consciousness of another client - powerful gangster Derek Krat—has been downloaded into Kraton’s body in error. Further complicating this bizarre situation is the fact the original Derek Krat (Brian Gant) is still very much alive and has been made aware of the lab’s mistake.
Imago Labs informs the Derek Krat clone his consciousness must be erased in order to place the correct mind inside Kraton’s new body. The problem for Michael Kraton, Imago Labs, and the original Derek Krat is the Krat clone has no intention of sacrificing his existence.
Written by Andrew M. Henderson and directed by Bradford Hill, Mirrored is a stylish sci-fi romp that lithely touches on the provocative ethical and moral thickets surrounding human cloning.
