Sci-Fi Short Film "Re-displacement" Explores The Affect Trauma Has On Memory
The complexities of the human mind is a puzzle science is still seeking to understand. In science fiction, many fascinating narratives have explored how our memories both shape and are influenced by our perception of reality.
In the enigmatic science fiction short film Re-displacement, a troubled young man named Leo (Nico Mirallegro) is undergoing an advanced form of psychiatric treatment that allows his therapist, Dr. Michelle (Nathalie Cox), to enter his mind.
The doctor is hoping to help him recover key information locked away in his long-term memory.
But soon, Leo comes to distrust the process as well as his own recollections of his traumatic past.
Written and directed by filmmaker Lewis Coates, Re-displacement is a provocative and challenging science fiction story that raises more questions than it answers.
How reliable are our memories?
How does trauma and emotional upheaval affect our perception of reality - and in turn, our recollection of it?
The short’s conclusion leaves many of these questions unanswered and open to the viewer’s own interpretation. This was intentional on Coates’ part, and while this decision is sure to be polarizing, I appreciate the fact the short doesn’t attempt to spoon-feed its audience by providing pat, tidy answers.
This is an emotionally intelligent science fiction vignette that relies on its intriguing premise, smartly written script, and compelling performances to deliver a singular viewing experience.
