Poignant Sci-Fi Short 'The Schwarzschild Radius' Will Leave You Emotionally Reeling - In Three Minutes
The Schwarzschild Radius is the radius of the event horizon surrounding a non-rotating black hole.
Sci-fi short film The Schwarzschild Radius finds a spaceship named Titan 2 caught in the gravitational pull of a black hole.
With only three minutes remaining, astronaut Scott Cooper (Govinda Roser) records a poignant final message for his young son back on earth. As a result of the ship getting inexorably closer to the black hole, Scott begins to experience a temporal phenomenon caused by the powerful gravitational forces at work.

The film is the latest sci-fi short from Pete Majarich, a filmmaker whose previous short films, Invasion and The Visitor, show his passion and talent for creating beautiful, meditative, and cinematic speculative landscapes on-screen.
With The Schwarzschild Radius, Majarich continues to impress with his uncanny ability to take rote genre tropes - in this case, a spaceship being caught in the gravitational pull of a black hole - and reinvigorate them by using cutting-edge technology to add visual flair and interest.
In the case of Radius, Majarich shot the entire film using the Xiaomi Mi11, a smartphone which boasts the best mobile camera array currently available.
Many genre projects are long on visual effects and woefully short on substance. Not so with Majarich’s films. Producing stylish, well-produced sci-fi shorts isn’t his only achievement. His films also explore the human condition through his singular artistic vision as a director.
As a result, his speculative works offer refreshing originality and perspective lacking in most mainstream sci-fi films.
The Schwarzschild Radius is another triumph for Majarich. In just three minutes, the striking sci-fi film shines by telling a resolutely human story which will prove resonant and affecting for many of its viewers.
